Why do bags sell in clothing stores?
Customers shopping for clothes usually come in with an outfit in mind: they pick a dress, a pair of trousers or a jacket, and the question “what do I carry with this?” comes up naturally. That is exactly where a bag comes in. Completing the look without going to another shop is convenient for the customer; for you, it is a chance to sell a second item to the same customer.
Bags have one more advantage over clothing: there are no sizes to worry about. The customer can try a bag without waiting for the fitting room, see it with the outfit in the mirror and decide quickly. That makes bags one of the most practical product groups a clothing store can use for cross-selling and raising the average basket value.
Which bags should you start with?
Starting with models that suit your store’s style and go easily with any outfit reduces risk. A practical starter plan:
- Everyday use: Shoulder bag and crossbody bag models in black, brown and beige go with almost any clothing style.
- Smart outfits: If you sell office or occasion wear, handbags and baguette bags are great complements.
- Evening wear and dress sellers: During the event season, evening bag and clutch models sell alongside dresses.
- Checkout area: Small items such as wallets and card holders get added to the basket at the last minute.
Buying a few pieces of each model in your first order and increasing variety is the safest way to learn what your customers like.
How should you display bags in the store?
Showing bags together with clothing, instead of tucking them away in a separate corner, makes them easier to sell. A few practical tips:
- Outfits on mannequins: Put a bag that matches the outfit on your window mannequin so customers see the complete look at a glance.
- Next to the fitting room: Keep a few bags on a shelf near the fitting room. Customers can try the bag while trying on clothes.
- Color matching: Display bags that match the season’s key clothing colors in the same section.
- Checkout area: Keep wallets and card holders close to the till; they are ideal for add-on sales at payment.
Simple outfit talk for your sales team
Setting up a bag section is not enough on its own; whoever talks to customers also needs to suggest bags naturally. This does not require lengthy sales training. A few simple phrases and habits are usually enough:
- Suggest through the outfit: Suggestions tied to the customer’s choice, such as “This bag looks great with that dress, would you like to see them together?”, are received far better than pushing a product.
- Usage scenario: Ask where the customer will wear the outfit. A structured shoulder bag works for the office, while a small clutch is a better fit for an evening event.
- Limit the options: Show the customer no more than two or three bags. Too many options can make the decision harder.
- Simple records: Note in a notebook which bags sell best with which outfits, and plan your next order based on those notes.
These small habits turn bags from a separate product into a natural part of the outfit in your store.
For clothing stores that sell online
If you also sell clothing via Instagram, your own website or a marketplace store, you can add bags without holding stock. With a dealer account you order from a single piece; the product cost is deducted from your dealer balance and we ship the item directly to your customer. See the bag dropshipping page for details. Approved dealers also receive an XML feed with product, stock and price information. We explain how to add bags to your online clothing store on this page.
You can download product images from the dealer panel and use them alongside your outfit photos.
