Light is everything

The best light is indirect daylight by a window. Direct sunlight creates harsh shadows and glare; a sheer curtain makes a great diffuser. When daylight isn't enough, use two equal light sources on either side of the bag. Don't mix lamps with different color temperatures: colors will look wrong and lead to "the color was different" returns.

Background

  • Use a plain white or light gray surface for the main image. Most marketplaces require a clean background.
  • If you curve a large sheet of white card from the wall down onto the table, no corner line will be visible.
  • For styled and social media images, you can use a simple setting (a table, a bench, a plain wall); the product should always stay in the foreground.

Angles you must shoot

  1. Front view: The main image; the bag straight on, upright and in shape.
  2. 45-degree angle: Shows depth.
  3. Side and back: Pocket and zipper details.
  4. Interior view: Compartments and lining; this is what customers are most curious about.
  5. Detail: Close-ups of the clasp, buckle, stitching and texture.
  6. In use: Carried in hand, on the shoulder or worn crossbody; this conveys size best.

Prepare the bag

Stuff the bag with paper to give it shape, arrange the strap neatly, remove tags and protective plastic, and dust it off. This small bit of preparation noticeably improves image quality.

Phone settings

  • Wipe the lens; fingerprints are the most common cause of blur.
  • Use the standard lens or 2x instead of wide angle; wide angle distorts the bag.
  • Tap the product to focus and lower the exposure slightly so the white background doesn't "blow out".
  • Use a tripod or a stack of books to keep the phone steady.

Editing

Only adjust brightness, white balance and cropping. Heavy filters change the product's color. Use the same aspect ratio for all products; your store will look consistent.
