In online sales customers buy without touching or trying the product, so returns are a natural part of e-commerce. But every return creates shipping, packing and time costs and requires the product to be resellable. Lowering your return rate and managing returns in an orderly way directly affects profitability.
The most common reasons for bag returns
- Size mismatch: The product is smaller or larger than expected.
- Colour mismatch: A difference is perceived between the photo and the real colour.
- Material expectations: The customer expected a different material or texture.
- Shipping damage: The product arrives crushed or damaged.
- Change of mind: The customer doesn’t like the product or changes their mind.
A product page that reduces returns
Many return reasons can be addressed on the product page:
- Accurate dimensions: Width, height, depth and strap length, plus photos showing scale. See how to measure a bag.
- Accurate colour: Unfiltered photos taken in daylight and the colour name stated clearly. See how to photograph bags.
- Accurate material: The material stated by its proper name. See faux leather vs genuine leather bags.
- What fits: Concrete examples such as a phone, A4 file or laptop.
Preventing shipping damage
Stuffing the bag with paper to protect its shape, using a sturdy box and protecting metal hardware reduces damage-related returns. Detailed packing tips are in our bag shipping and packaging guide.
Right of withdrawal and the legal framework
In Türkiye, for distance sales, consumers have the right to withdraw within 14 days of receiving the product without giving a reason, subject to certain exceptions. Marketplaces also have their own return rules and processes. Because legislation and platform rules can change, check current information from official sources and the seller guide of the platform you sell on; consult a lawyer if needed.
Write a clear returns policy
- Return period and conditions
- When a product will be accepted for return (tagged, unused, etc.)
- How return shipping works
- When and how refunds are made
Publishing this clearly on the product page and your site’s returns page builds customer trust and reduces disputes.
Handling incoming returns
- Record: Log the reason for every return.
- Inspect: Check the product for signs of use, damage and missing parts.
- Prepare for resale: Clean undamaged products, restore their shape, repack and return them to stock.
- Analyse: If the same reason repeats for a product, fix the product page; for example, for an item often returned as “too small”, highlight the dimensions and scale photo.
Building return costs into your price
Return costs should be included in your profit calculation. Knowing your average return rate helps you set the right sale price. For a worked example, see our article on calculating dropshipping profit.
