A bag is held all day and set down on tables, floors and car seats, so it naturally gets dirty. The wrong cleaning method, however, can permanently damage its coating, colour or shape. This guide is for anyone who wants their bag to last and for sellers who want to give customers the right care information.
Before you start cleaning
- Check the label or product description to find out the material.
- Empty the bag completely; pens, make-up or coins left in pockets can cause stains during cleaning.
- Test your method on a small hidden area first.
- Never put a bag in the washing machine; unless the label says otherwise, clean it by hand.
How to clean a faux leather bag
Faux leather is one of the easiest materials to care for.
- Remove surface dust with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
- Add a few drops of liquid soap to a bowl of lukewarm water; dampen the cloth and wring it out well.
- Wipe the surface in circular motions without pressing hard.
- Remove soap residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a dry cloth.
Strong chemicals such as alcohol, acetone, bleach and thinner can dry out and crack the coating; do not use them. Wiping the handles and other high-contact areas regularly prevents darkening.
Caring for genuine leather bags
Genuine leather breathes and absorbs water, so the cloth should be only very slightly damp. After cleaning, a thin layer of suitable leather conditioner can be applied. Drying it in direct sunlight or on a radiator hardens and cracks the leather; let it dry naturally at room temperature.
Fabric and canvas bags
Stains on fabric bags can be spot-cleaned with a soft brush and mildly soapy water. Even if the label says washable, hand-washing in cold water is safer for keeping the shape. Stuffing the bag with paper or a towel while it dries helps it hold its form.
Suede and suede-look bags
Suede textures are sensitive to water, so dry cleaning is best: remove dust and light marks with a suede brush or a clean eraser. If it gets wet, stuff it with paper and let it dry naturally, then brush the nap in one direction once dry.
Evening, satin and embellished bags
Evening bags are usually not washable. Gently dab stains on satin with a barely damp cloth without pressing. On beaded or embellished styles, rubbing can loosen stones. The best care is to store them in a dust bag after use, with nothing heavy on top.
Practical tips for common stains
- Ballpoint pen: On faux leather, it can be wiped with a damp cloth if caught quickly; it gets harder over time. Strong solvents can damage the coating.
- Grease: On fabric, sprinkle a little cornflour or talc on the stain, leave for a few hours, then brush off.
- Make-up: First remove the excess with a dry cloth, then dab with a soapy damp cloth.
- Rain marks: Dry the bag immediately with a dry cloth, stuff it with paper and let it dry naturally.
How to store a bag
- Stuff the bag with paper or soft fabric to keep its shape.
- Use a dust bag or cotton cover; plastic bags trap moisture.
- Do not stack bags on top of each other; handles and corners can get crushed.
- Tuck long straps inside the bag; bags left hanging by the strap for a long time may get strap marks.
- Keep bags away from direct sunlight, which causes fading.
For sellers: giving customers care information
Care information is the cheapest way to reduce after-sales complaints. Adding a two-line care note to the product description or putting a small care card in the package helps customers use the product correctly. A sample card text:
“You can wipe your bag with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use alcohol or bleach. When not in use, stuff it with paper and keep it in its dust bag.”
